Wisdom teeth (third molar)

Wisdom tooth extraction is one of the most common procedures performed in the UK. Using state-of-the-art equipment and a wealth of expertise, our dental team can gently and safely carry out the removal of wisdom teeth at our private practice. Wisdom teeth, or third molars, grow at the back of your gums, with usually one in each of the four corners of the mouth.

What causes problems?

Wisdom teeth emerge in the late teens and early twenties after the full set of adult teeth are already set in place. Sometimes there is not enough space for them. Wisdom teeth can cause problems if any of the following happens:

  • They can't break through your gums and become impacted

  • They emerge only partially and a flap of gum tissue grows over them

  • They grow crooked or at an angle

  • They are too far back in your mouth to be easily cleaned

  • Food and bacteria become stuck and cause a build up of plaque

What are the symptoms?

  • Pain or jaw stiffness near an impacted tooth

  • Pain or irritation from a tooth coming in at an awkward angle

  • Crowding of other teeth

  • Tooth decay or gum disease

  • Severe pain at the back of the mouth

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms with a wisdom tooth, removal may be your best option. We encourage you to consult us before any serious dental issues arise. Your wisdom teeth are always checked during your regular dental check-ups, but if you are experiencing severe pain then contact our team immediately.

Removing wisdom teeth is really only necessary if they are causing pain or complications. However, many patients decide to go ahead with the removal of wisdom teeth simply because they're virtually useless.

The procedure

Our friendly and experienced team provide clean, gentle and professional wisdom tooth removal in London with minimum discomfort. Your dentist will X-ray and thoroughly examine your mouth before the procedure. You will then be given a local anaesthetic injection to numb the area and the tooth will be removed.

After the procedure

The after effects of local anaesthesia vary from person to person. It's recommended that you avoid engaging in any strenuous activity. However, your dentist will give you post operative instructions.

Pain-wise you may feel slight discomfort and swelling which can last for a few days. Your dentist will give you clear after-care instructions to follow.

Recommendations:

  • Use an ice pack to prevent swelling and changes in skin colour

  • Exercise your jaw by slowly closing and opening your mouth

  • Keep hydrated

  • Start brushing your teeth the next day, avoiding the extraction area

  • Only use the painkillers as advised or prescribed by your dentist

Avoid:

  • Eating hard or sticky food

  • Drinking fizzy drinks

  • Smoking

  • Drinking through a straw (loosens the blood clot and delays healing)

  • Vigorous rinsing or touching your mouth for the first 24 hours

How much does wisdom tooth removal cost?

The cost of extracting wisdom teeth usually depends on two main factors:

  • The complexity of the extraction procedure (e.g. impacted tooth)

  • The type of the procedure needed (surgical or non-surgical)

A non-surgical removal could cost anywhere from £150 to £350. This price range covers the removal procedure only and does not include any fees relating to X-rays or oral surgeries. The exact price will depend on the details of your own individual case. The cost will be discussed during the initial consultation session. Your dentist will examine your mouth and decide upon the specific treatment needed to extract your teeth as safely and effectively as possible.
