BONE GRAFTING

Dental Bone grafting involves the replacement of lost jawbone to repair complex bone fractures and also during dental implant surgery to introduce supporting bone structure. Where teeth have been missing for a long time, the resultant loss of bone and gum may mean that there is not enough bone for the implants to be fixed into. With the aid of bone grafting surgery, often from the chin,can be grafted to support the new implant.

BONE GRAFTING AND OTHER APPLICATIONS

This surgery can also be used to fuse joints and prevent movement, for the repair of broken bones that have not yet healed or where there is bone loss. The ultimate aim of bone grafting is for the operated bone to heal or regrow.

RECOVERY

Recovery time largely depends on factors such as the size of the graft and type of injury or defect. Recovery can take two to twelve weeks, during which time you are advised not to participate in vigorous physical activities continuing to abstain for up to 6 months to allow for complete healing.

RECOVERY

• Use an Ice-pack to reduce swelling and bruising

• Drink a lot of water

• Elevate the grafting area to prevent inflammation and pain

• Avoid eating hard foods

• Do not use a straw to drink as the suction might dislodge the clot that is essential to healing.

• Don't smoke as this will slow your recovery
